George was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 1990. After spending several years ignoring his disease, he decided it was time to start over. So he started a blog called The B.A.D. Blog (The Born Again Diabetes Blog) and began sharing his diabetes life with others. He is a husband, father of two, writer, and musician.
George now writes his blog on his own website called Ninjabetic.com and proclaims that “it takes being a ‘ninja’ to live successfully with diabetes.”

Not by Choice
written by George Simmons for World Diabetes Day
When we first met I had no clue
Who you were, what you meant, or what you'd do.
I tried to run but where to run to?
Tried to hide away but you knew.
You're here with me but not by choice.
You scream so loud without a voice.
I learned your name but still I don't understand
why it never ends.
My bloody hands, my tired heart,
my spirit broken from the start.
I try to blame myself but that's not right.
Maybe I've got you 'cause God knew I'd fight.
You're here with me but not by choice.
You scream so loud without a voice.
I learned your name but still I don't understand
why it never ends.
Until that day when my times through
I'll fight for life and help others to fight too.
'cause we can stop no, that's for sure.
Until we find ourselves and everyone a cure.
You're here with me but not by choice.
You scream so loud without a voice.
I learned your name but still I don't understand
why it never ends.
